by adminYou may have read in other sections of the site our upcoming (huge) Indochina tour with a TV show in 2008. At the moment we are beating our heads against the wall dealing with the Vietnamese as we plan on riding around 10 days in the north of Vietnam but this is typical with the Vietnamese. Possibly we will be banned forever to enter the country ever again after writing this but here goes....
175cc ban now lifted? (so the rumor goes)
Riding motorcycles into Vietnam was restricted to a maximum of 175cc however, recent news on the grapevine is this restriction has now been lifted allowing for larger bikes to enter. But lets look at that in more detail...When the 175cc ban was in place it was still virtually impossible to cross the border regardless of the paperwork you had with even a 100cc bike despite it was legally permitted! So, if the original law wasn't worth the paperwork it was written on why should the new law be any different?
Dealing with the Vietnamese
Vietnam is an awesome country to visit and we love to visit the country very much however, it is let down by ridiculous nonsense red tape and sadly with the huge economical growth of the country many of the people seem to have lost control of their minds where money means absolutely everything but, have forgotten to offer a service that people expect. This has been proved to us within the last few days when quotations to assist us for accommodation bookings, supply of guides and motorcycle rentals have been given to us even before we listed our requirements proving that money is the most important thing! We understand that earning money is important but how the hell can someone who are allegedly business people offer a quotation price before they know what to quote for? It's beyond us! But, maybe this experience is a one off? Sadly no! So far 5 companies have all responded along the same lines so maybe it is our problem so we looked into this and thought maybe we are going about it the wrong way! We contacted 3 other Travel companies outside of Vietnam and all said the same things. Trying to get the Vietnamese to work professionally is simply out of character... broken promises, Invoices that never match the quotation, and worst of all when a booking has been made just be grateful if it is carried out...If a better offer comes in they will drop you like a stone.
So should you avoid Vietnam?
No! Despite its idiosyncrasies it is worth the effort to go to Vietnam at the moment If you enter simply as a tourist you will probably never have to deal with these problems. As a person trying to do business you need the patience of a saint and always assume that whet you are told is a pack of lies and you will not be disappointed! The unique character of the country make or break your holiday for us doing business we need a more positive pre-tour plan from the people that work with us!
Did I get out of bed the wrong side this morning?
Not really, but, currently making plans for riding motorcycles in 4 countries in one tour it seems the one country that is giving us the problems is Vietnam but, to be fair we knew this would happen from the start. When we make arrangements to ride other countries we expect support and assistance and we get this from all countries except Vietnam! If you happen to be a Vietnamese company reading this and want to prove to us that it is easy to deal with a Vietnam company then please contact us. I have heard that some Vietnamese are angry with western companies operating successful companies in the country but the maybe the western companies are offering a true customer driven operation? We are seriously considering dropping Vietnam from future tours and maybe wait until something changes in the business attitude of the people or the Government get their act together and when a law is applied they actually do apply it! Our priority lies with our customers and we need companies that hold this in the highest regard also. Our customers are pleased we operate this way and do not offer just lip service!
Who was this aimed at? All Vietnamese companies that want to earn the incomes they hold in such high regard! Offer something, give good service and get paid! Call us old fashioned but that's generally the way we work!
