This time of the year will add a great deal of adventure to your motorbike tour!  Unlike the south of Thailand the Northern regions only has one monsoon season and it continues for an incredible 5 months but, it is not as bad as it sounds.  It doesn't rain every day but when it doe's it really rains so our guide below gives an indication of the best time to ride in the monsoon season in North Thailand.

Our tours are booked individually at this period of the year meaning you can choose any tour and almost any date.  Simply contact us to book a tour and let us do the rest.

May

Not actually classed as Monsoon season however, maybe connected to global weather changes since 2007 we thought we should bring May into the Monsoon season ourselves...2007 through till 2009 May saw major rainfall in the early part of the month in Mae Hong Son province (in the mountains) in fact in 2009 it rained almost continuously from the 3rd until the 15th though it cleared up soon after bringing clear blue skies for the remainder of the month.  With that in mind May can be an unpredictable month especially in the mountains however, if you are blessed with good luck, have suitable rain gear and prepared to get wet May is a good time to ride.

June and July

Again it doesn't rain everyday but the chances of you riding say a 6 day tour and not getting wet may mean you have been blessed by the gods!  Dramatic scenery and  lush jungles await those riding this time of the year.  Understanding that the chances of you staying dry is remote the best time is June with the highest chances of getting rained upon.  July is the time  clouds are building towards their bursting point and the peak monsoon season (see below).  The off road riding is carefully gauged by your experience and the local conditions so, be prepared to cut short some of the planned off road in your tour and revert to road riding if rains are persistent.

August -September

Highest chance of landslides and severe mayhem off road in fact  we only operate motorbike tours in August and September providing you undertsand that your tour may be affected by weather conditions.  Rain can be outrageous with rivers bursting their banks in fact rivers crossed during our peak season tours barely making it above your wheel rim will be now in full force and most will be totally impassable!

What They Said

We went on an off road tour with Motorbike Thailand from the 19th to the 26th of July.  As Andy said; "each day would be more challenging than the last"  and he was certainly true to his word. Every single day was more challenging culminating in us having lunch with representatives of the Sham army 1500m up a mountain.  I have to say the trip was exceptional and i will definitely be back next year. The bikes and accommodation were both great along with the camaraderie between all the guys. One of the expectational aspects of the week was that Andy really made an effort to teach, particularly Michel and I how to ride a bike properly both on and off the road. I will always take inspiration from his "get you r f**ing feet on the pegs when I am next sliding down a hill of mud on a bike.  Cheers guys for a great week!  Mark (Hong Kong near the outskirts of Scotland)
