Thai New year

Thai new year is about to start and with comes a lot of water though not from the skies.  April 13th 2010 in the Thai calendar is the year 2553 (543 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar) marking the 2553 since the lord Buddha found Nirvana.  The biggest event in the Thai calendar when almost every business will close for up to 10 days to celebrate.

Celebrations over Thai new year (known as 'Songkran') have evolved from a simple pouring of water over the wrist from a revered monk to mass water fights in the street where everyone is a perfect target for anyone with a hose pipe, water gun, even fire engine hoses!  The water throwing festival is great fun though can be a little tedious after 10 days of getting a soaking when it's almost impossible to even pop to the shops without getting drenched in ice cold water.

We don't ride motorbike tours at this time due to the dangers; Riding at speed and getting an ice cold bucket of water in the face (complete with lumps of ice) is simply not cricket!

What They Said

Neils Comments"I was on a dual terrain trip and had a fantastic time!   The tour leader did a great job of gauging our abilities (which thankfully improved whilst we were there) and adjusting the route accordingly. In fact there was a sense of 'let's go this way, it looks fun' which I approve of. Neill Gilhooley (Toured with Simon Baker 2009)
